The earth’s surface is irregular. Undulating and varied. Shaped by a violent geological past and continuously altered by a sundry of natural processes. Human beings however, like level planes. We feel comfortable on flat, predictable surfaces. Retaining walls are the tools we as landscape architects use to shape the earth’s surface into functional spaces, we as humans like to be in.
